Overview
The new FX Trader order management tool has been designed specifically for Forex traders, with a completely customizable layout that you can modify to exactly suit your preferences. The FXTrader provides an optimized trading interface with a world class competitive platform and quality of market for your Forex trades.
An important distinction with Interactive Brokers FX platform is that IB is a completely neutral agent – a significant difference from many other FX platforms.
IB does not take the counterparty of the other side of the trade – our only priority is to execute the order at the best possible price. We use the same smart routing technology as for US stocks and US options by continuously monitoring the quotes of various liquidity providers, constructing a best of book and routing the order to the provider who at that moment in time appears at the top of book.
Interbank Platform
We provide two vehicles for the exchange of currencies, IDEALPRO, interbank platform, which allows a customer to trade Forex and IDEAL which allows a customer to convert their balances from one currency to another.

IDEALPRO – is for larger orders – greater than $25,000 USD equivalent which are routed to the interbank market. IdealPro is actually a SMART route where we consider each liquidity provider as an exchange.
IDEAL is our small order book facility for orders under $25,000 USD or equivalent. This is basically for facilitation orders -- closing out currency balances people get when they do transactions for example in Euro stocks or Euro futures and they generate a Euro balance (+ or -) and want to convert it back to US dollars. That is the main function for Ideal. Liquidity is provided by Timber Hill and other clients. (Note: bank prices do not feed this market.) We monitor the prevailing prices and construct a consolidated book, based on price quotes of a half dozen liquidity providers (banks) as well as Timber Hill. Client orders are allowed to participate.

IDEALPRO works like an ECN

Bank quotes do not actually rest inside IB’s central books but our routing functionality allows it to look like a consolidated quote book from the various banks plus internal order providers (clients).
Neutrality: IB is not the counterparty on the trade and our only interest is to deliver the best execution.
Our quote providers give us typical quote depth for major currencies of 5-15M USD equivalent per bank provider.
IDEALPRO consolidated quote is typically 10-30M size on 0.5-2.0 pip spreads on the major currencies. (During most liquid trading hours you can see a .5 pip spread on the top traded currency pairs USD/EUR and USD/JPY

Costs to trade at IB

Unlike numerous other Forex brokers that do not charge commissions for Forex trades and build their profits into the bid ask spread, Interactive Brokers unbundles all fees which make them transparent.
Instead of adding 1-5 pips onto the spread, Interactive Brokers passes through interbank quotes from our bank partners directly to customers, and we then charge an explicit 0.2 bps commission.
There is no such thing as a free lunch, and it is our preference to disclose to customers what they are paying.

Access to FXTrader
FXTrader icon should be visible on the toolbar.
If you do not have the icon, it can be enabled in the Feature Selector. To enable, use the toolbar icon. Or, on Configure menu, choose the Feature Selector. In Order Management section, be sure FXTrader is checked. Click Apply, then OK.
FXTrader Components

Quotes are displayed in individual cells which use the same color defaults as the main TWS screen.
Notice how the view is optimized to show you the key elements. The FX Price display emphasizes on the important part of the price.
See the volume below the quote - to keep the window less confusing, rather than volume numbers changing colors with every tick, there’s an uptick/downtick indicator whose color will change.
Book icon (Small Order Book Indicator) indicates there’s a quote in the small order book that’s better than what’s displayed. Ideal is treated as an odd lot small order book on this system. People may wish to sweep that out so we are providing a consolidated look. Hover your cursor over the book and a tool tip will display the details.
Cells can be dragged to reposition in the grid and contracts can be dragged from the contract label area to your trading page to create a market data line.

Adding an FX instruments to TWS
When you first open the FXTrader, the screen will display the major currency pairs already loaded. You have complete flexibility with the contracts you want displayed You can remove those contracts you do not use. To add an FX instrument:

In a blank FXTrader cell, there is a Click here to edit box:
Enter the DENOMINATOR currency. This is the asset you are trading.
Select “Forex” as the asset class.
Select the payment currency (numerator).
Select IDEALPRO
OK (or Apply)

IDEALPRO orders currencies:

GBP	KRW (limited)	NOK

Also we’re updating our back office facilities and once complete, it will be possible to include additional currencies – second tier European currencies such as Polish zloty, Russian ruble, Czech koruna and the Israeli shekel.

Minimum order size is $25,000 equivalent USD. You can find the order limitations on our web site.
Maximum Order size today is $5 Million - this is meant to prevent fat finger errors, for example entering 10 million instead of 1 million. Multiple orders can be stacked up and entered rapidly.

Order Types

Bracket orders may be added in the future.
Stop order trigger methods (for stop, stop-limit and trailing stop orders): Last sale is not available as a stop order trigger method. Midpoint or Bid-Ask variants must be used due to absence of last sale data.
Submit an order by clicking the desired bid or offer price. The order displays in the cell and on the Order Management panel at the top of the page. Modify order parameters if desired and click Transmit.
Each cell shows working orders for that contract.
Execution tab in the order management panel shows filled orders submitted in the FXTrader.
For people who want to trade very fast and very aggressively, there is a check box to transmit instantaneously. A disclaimer pops up because this is dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.
See position, average price and P&L – a contract style view which clients have asked for a very long time -- to see FX positions as contract based rather than in the decomposed view.

Order Routing
The small order book Ideal and large order book IdealPro are distinct exchanges and you can enter orders in either one. Our intent is to create a single view and allow our Smart Router to take care of getting the order to the right place.

If you enter a large order and direct to the small order book, we will route the order to the best execution on the interbank market.
If you enter a small order on this screen, we will route it automatically to the small order book where it will be given an execution at 1 pip less – similar to the way the NYSE odd lot works – odd lots fill at one tick worse.

Inverted quoting

Quote is expressed in Spot terms but you can choose to display as the Globex futures quotes (invert) using icon in upper right by clicking the double green arrows at the top right corner of a cell.
This will allow traders to view and trade Forex side by side with Globex futures.
Inverted displays are identified by an asterisk after the title, and a blue "inverted" icon in place of the green double arrows.
Currently you cannot create orders when the quote is inverted. Inverted quoting only allows seeing the quote upside down – subsequent releases will allow you to trade from the inverted quote.
While we call this the FX Trader screen it works very well for other types of contracts. Keep in mind, you are limited to the number of contracts that will display in the 4x4 grid.
While designed for Forex this feature works ideally for Futures to trade side by side. Same facilities available for futures, it’s just optimized for Forex.
US long bond ZB futures are shown in native terms 112 23/32 bid and 112 25/32 offer. For the first time in TWS history the quote is displayed in native terms -- a very nice way to trade capital market futures.

You can load any instrument on this screen.

Configuration

We offer you the ability to create your own look and feel.
Click the Configure icon on the toolbar.
Choose your display preference from the themes provided.
Choose how many cells to display – max is 4x4.
Click and drag an individual cell to reposition in the grid.

Adjust Position and Cost

Right click on a cell and select Adjust Position and Cost to reset the daily P&L values.
It is helpful when you do translation trades (currency exchanges) and actual Forex trades in your account, to separate the P&L and average cost for your FX positions.
You can also adjust the position and average cost in the Account window.
Note you must first enable “Include Forex positions in portfolio” on the Account Window to enable this functionality.

Description

To access charts from the FX trader use the right click menu on the cell you want charted. This brings up a default currency layout with the chart displaying MidPoint as the primary focus. Note: due to the absence of last sale data, currency charts will not display trade data – you must use the Midpoint or Bid/Ask in the What to show field of the Chart Parameters set up window.

Include FX Positions in portfolio

For FX Traders, we give the ability to see currency positions in a contract style view – select the Include FX Positions in portfolio.
Contract style is the basis for a running P&L and average cost. The position display is consistent with how we display other contracts.
Group all currencies together in the Account window by right clicking in the Contract Description column of the Portfolio panel and choose to Sort by Security Type.
You can manually change the position and/or average cost of FX positions from the Portfolio section of the Account window if you have checked the Include FX positions in portfolio box.
Right click on a Forex position in the Portfolio section of the Account window, (or from the Currencies menu) select Adjust Position and Cost. Enter a new position size or average cost and click OK.
Please note that this feature does not implement any changes to your portfolio. It is designed to allow you to separate out currency exchanges from FX position values, include positions you may hold somewhere else, or to view the results of hypothetical trades you may want to make.

Hot Keys
Several Hotkeys have been pre-set. To view the keystroke combinations use the Help menu and select Show Hot Key Pop-up.

Miscellaneous

Auto closing small positions -- Customers complained it was difficult to close very small positions $1 or 80¢ euro cent position. So every night we will auto close these positions out at a neutral price to make the accounting easier for customers who want to get flat every day.
Commission billing is now in the base currency to allow you to more precisely determine your position.
IB will break trades that are more than 3% away from the market on cash Forex at IDEAL.
IDEALPRO Forex Trading is currently not available to Hong Kong residents (a leveraged foreign exchange license is required).

There is a substantial risk of loss in foreign exchange trading. The settlement date of foreign exchange trades can vary due to time zone differences and bank holidays. When trading across foreign exchange markets, this may necessitate borrowing funds to settle foreign exchange trades. The interest charges on borrowed funds must be considered when computing the cost of trades across multiple markets.
